Snorkeling is one of the fun and refreshing sports. You can experience amazing underwater view such as reef fish, coral reef, shipwrecks, whale sharks, manta rays, and many mores. But snorkeling can be dangerous for those who easy to panic, can not swim well, or afraid of the ocean depth. Here some tips for the beginners so you can snorkel happily and safe!
Check your snorkeling equipment
Make sure your mask, snorkel, and fins are fit on you. There is general test to know if your mask fits you or not. Hold the mask to your face and breath in through your nose, If the mask seals perfectly and stays in place without you holding it then you have yourself a mask that fits perfectly.
Use fins that are not too tight but also not too loose. Be mindful that you don’t kick and knock over any corals.
Protect your skin
Wear t-shirt or rash guard to protect your skin from sun-burning and make sure you dont use sunblock that will damage the reef (biodegradable sunblock are better)
- Breath in, Breath out
Get used to breathing out of a snorkel. Keep the top of the snorkel afloat. If water comes in, you can easily blow the water out. Put your mask on and breathe through the tube! Don’t bite the tube, rest your teeth or your jaw will get really sore really fast.
- Defog your mask
Knowing how to clear your mask from water is the important thing! Mask that filled up with water can be a factor makes the beginners easy to panic. The spit and rub technique is the basic principle of how to defog your mask.
Also, don’t forget to clear all hair from your forehead before you wear the mask, hair in between your face and your mask will cause the water to leak.
- Start by swimming around the shallow area before plunging into the deep
Float, glide, and direct yourself using your fins. Swim at a pace that allows you to breathe normally. Use life jacket or any sort floatation device to help you float if you are not a strong swimmer/floater.
If you are a newbi snorkeler, choose a place that has calm waters. Also better to start snorkeling from a beach instead of jumping out of a boat as you can gradually swim towards a depth you are comfortable with.
Relax and enjoy!
The most important thing for newbie snorkelers is to RELAX! If you start to feel panicked, just lift up your head and float on your back. There are so many spectacular unforgettable moments we can experience while snorkeling. From snorkeling along with colorful and beautiful fish in shallow water to snorkeling with amazing manta rays in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. So dont waste your wonderful time in ocean!
